Volunteer Positions for IS|CS 2018

Intersections | Cross-sections 2018 is looking for volunteers to help with the smooth running of this student-run conference. There are a variety of roles, so no matter what your strengths or expertise, there is a special job for you. Volunteers are not limited to one position, and are encouraged to express interest in multiple tasks. This is a great opportunity for students to get involved and become comfortable within a conference setting, as well as a great addition for your CV.

Volunteer

Cross-sections Art Installers & Take-Down:

This task will include assisting with setting up Cross-sections art pieces at Ryerson and the reception, as per artists requirements. Volunteers must ensure that no art pieces are damaged, taken or altered during the installation and take down process.

Estimated Possible Shifts:
Mar 9, 6-7pm, 11pm-12am at 720 Bathurst Street (Centre for Social Innovation)
Mar 10, 7:30-9am, 5-6pm at Image Arts Building, Ryerson University

Cross-sections Runner:

The runner will be on hand during the set-up and/or take-down of Cross-sections, responsible for fetching materials, or renting A/V equipment for the day for Cross-sections. MUST be a Ryerson student with a OneCard in good standing.

Mar 9, 6-7pm, 11pm-12am at 720 Bathurst Street (Centre for Social Innovation)
Mar 10, 7:30-9am, 5-6pm at Image Arts Building, Ryerson University

Cross-sections Reception and Gallery Art Attendants:

This position will require volunteers to stand guard over artwork while on display at the reception and/or gallery. Volunteers will ensure that art pieces are not damaged, altered, or taken by guests. Tasks will include answering basic questions about the art posed by guests, based on information on the art pieces provided to you, as well as assisting with gallery changes as required. Art Attendants for the reception portion MUST be SOBER VOLUNTEERS.

Mar 10, 9am-1pm, 1-5pm at Image Arts Building, Ryerson University

Cross-sections Sober Volunteers:

IS|CS requires Sober Volunteers for the Cross-sections reception, which will require volunteers to ensure that guests are honouring the Code of Conduct as set by IS|CS.

Possible Shifts:
Mar 9, 7-11pm at 720 Bathurst Street (Centre for Social Innovation)

Intersections Set-Up/Take-Down Helpers:

Volunteers are needed at York and Ryerson to assist with setting up for Intersections on Friday March 9 and Saturday March 10, 2018.

Estimated Possible Shifts:
Mar 9, 8-9am at TBD, York University
Mar 10, 8-9am at Student Learning Centre, Ryerson University

Intersections | Cross-sections York & Ryerson Registration:

This position will require volunteers to operate the registration booth on either day of the event. Tasks will include signing in presenters and attendees, ensuring that all guests and presenters sign the Media Release Form. This position will require volunteers to pick up refreshments prior to opening registration booth.

Mar 9, 9am-1pm, 1-5pm at TBD, York University
Mar 10, 9am-1pm, 1-5pm at Student Learning Centre, Ryerson University

Intersections Moderators:

Volunteers are needed to act as moderators throughout Intersections. Volunteers will be assigned an academic panel or multiple academic panels to attend and moderate. This will involve ensuring each speaker has their presentation uploaded to the computer for projection, if necessary, introducing each speaker, and ensuring that each panel does not go over the assigned hour time-limit.

Possible Shifts:
Variable, will be assigned specific panels during March 9th or 10th, 2018 at York University or Ryerson University.

Cross-sections Moderators:

Volunteers are needed to act as moderators throughout Cross-sections. Volunteers will be assigned an artist talk, artist panel or multiple artist panels to attend and moderate. This will involve ensuring each speaker has their presentation uploaded to the computer for projection, if necessary, introducing each speaker, and ensuring that each panel does not go over the assigned hour time-limit.

Variable, will be assigned specific talks/panels during March 9 or 10, 2018 at York University or Ryerson University.

Intersections | Cross-sections Tweeters:

This task requires volunteers with a Twitter account and online access to live-tweet using the conference hashtag #IS|CS2018, tweet observational comments on the presentations/panel content, tweet meaningful quotes from presenters, when possible, using their Twitter handles, and retweeting relevant tweets to @ComCultIS|CS. Tweeters must engage in active listening at panels they will be assigned to.

Variable, will be assigned specific talks/panels during March 9 or 10, 2018 at York University or Ryerson University.

Photographers:

IS|CS is looking for volunteers to capture IS|CS through photos. This position will necessitate moving through the conference to get good angles, lighting, positioning etc. This task requires a high quality digital camera and equipment to transfer photos from the camera to a computer or dropbox at the end of each day. Tasks will include, taking photographs of presenters/panelists with guidance from Volunteer Director, regarding consent (Media Release Forms), photograph interesting facets of the conference (i.e. registration desk, action shots of working volunteers/committee members, signage, food), and upload photographs to a computer or dropbox at the end of each day.

Possible Shifts:
Variable, dependent on photographer’s availability during March 9 and 10, 2018 at York University, Ryerson University, or the Centre for Social Innovation (720 Bathurst Street).

First Aid:

IS|CS would like a volunteer who has up-to-date first aid certification and a reliable cell phone. As first aid volunteer you will be responsible for responding to any medical emergencies during the conference, using your training. Do not hesitate to call 9-1-1 if uncertain, or believe medical emergency requires immediate additional attention.

Floater:

The floater position will require volunteers to walk around the conference spaces, providing volunteer assistance to any other volunteers or organizers upon request. This may involve setting-up or taking-down, aiding registration, serving as a temporary Gallery Attendant, etc. If a volunteer is missing, the Volunteer Director will assign a Floater to their position.

First aid certification and a high quality digital camera are bonuses. Must have a reliable cell phone.
