About IS|CS
Intersections | Cross-Sections
Intersections | Cross-Sections (IS|CS) is an interdisciplinary conference organized by and for graduate student scholars, artists and activists through the organizing efforts of the Communication and Culture Graduate Students Association (GSA), York University and Toronto Metropolitan University students.
Since 2002, the conference has attracted graduate students from around the world to present papers and participate in the various panels and workshops. While the annual conference theme changes, the topics generally reflect the nature of our program and the work it nurtures. As scholars doing interdisciplinary work in a joint program, we are especially interested in encountering and generating significant intersections of art, activism and academia. The conference generally reviews proposals for not only papers but also creative works, media submissions and poster presentations.
This year the conference will be held on Saturday March 9, 2024.
Statement of Purpose
Intersections | Cross-Sections provides a platform through which the Joint Program in Communication and Culture between Toronto Metropolitan and York Universities can showcase the best graduate work produced in the program (and in relevant fields), provide a forum for meaningful exchange with other graduate programs in Canada and the United States, and help to foster intellectual development between undergraduate, graduate and faculty members.
To that end, the conference operates on an open platform which is inclusive, non-hierarchical, and which strives to develop themes that are applicable to all three streams of the program: media and culture, politics and policy, and technology in practice. It seeks to utilize the best resources available at both campuses, recognizes the cultural importance of Toronto as a place for academic inquiry and growth, and seeks to continually grow and improve itself by building on past successes.
